Sikorsky S-38. Flying in an Inter-Island Airways S-38 over what is today known as Hawaii Kai. The passengers here would pass by Koko Head, probably clearing the top by only a hundred feet or so at a cruising speed of probably 70-80 mph (the S-38 could do 110 mph) and then suddenly find themselves staring directly down at an ancient sea filled      volcano crater. This was Hanauma Bay, a beautiful coral and tropical fish sanctuary. The S-38 could easily drift down and land in the shallow waters and let passengers see the reef fish from only a few feet away. An S-38 cruises by Koko Head after passing over Maunalua Bay and the small community of Portlock. This area was also the location for an international Marconi wireless relay station for the
Pacific.
